There are not many eye surgeries that have a success rate like Eye laser treatment. With a success rate of over 90 percent in the last two decades or so, this treatment is worthy of discussion. Here, we are going over the treatment as a whole for your benefit.
Laser eye surgery is a type of refractive surgery procedure that is performed to solve the defectiveness of the human eyes. As a result of this surgery, the patient is able to see with a clear vision again.
This surgery or treatment is effective to solve problems such as myopia, hyperopia, and also astigmatism. [We will explain these terms later]
This type of surgery is generally performed by an ophthalmologist. Ophthalmol… what? An Ophthalmologist is a specialist of medicine who works and treats many eye-related diseases.
This surgery has other names that many people use. One of them is ‘laser vision correction’. I like this term because it kind of gives a better idea of the treatment and how it works.
Terms You Need to Know
Before we get into the whole thing, you should know some basic terms. These will help you understand the whole article better.
Myopia: A disease in human eyes where they see distant objects with blurry vision. There is no problem in seeing the near objects clearly.
Hyperopia: The eye-related disease which makes the near objects look blurry. But the objects at a far distance are seen clearly. It is also known as hypermetropia.
Astigmatism: A type of refractive error where light does not pass onto the retina evenly. This causes blurred vision at a near and far distance.
Cornea: The dome-shaped, clear frontal part of your eye is called cornea. The cornea allows light to enter into your eyes.
Retina: The light-sensitive part that lines the inner surface of the back of your eyeball. It covers two-thirds of your eyeball.
There are three prime surgeries related to laser. They are LASIK, LASEK, and PRK. We will discuss these three at this point. It is important to recognize that all three of these surgeries do the same work. They all re-shape the cornea. But there is a slight difference in how they do it because they follow different procedures.
LASIK is the most common and popular among laser eye treatments. It is a pretty simple operation that takes only about 10 minutes to complete. First, the doctor will give anesthetic eye drops which will make your eyes numb. Anesthetic drops are given so that you do not feel any pain.
Then a tiny part of the tissue from your eye will be cut. This is referred to as the flap. This flap will gently be lifted and guess what happens next? Yep! Laser begins. The laser only lasts for about a minute. The laser helps to reshape the corneal tissue. Then the flap is put into its original place.
PRK means Photorefractive Keratectomy. PRK is actually the very first type of laser-based surgery. In the PRK procedure, the thin epithelium layer is completely removed. This is done to get access to the deeper cornea tissues. The removed epithelium layer grows back after a few days of surgery.
After getting access to the corneal tissues, the laser is used like LASEK to re-shape the cornea. PRK treatment is exceptionally best for very thin corneas.
LASEK is the closest treatment to PRK. In LASEK surgery, the thin epithelium layer is not completely removed. It is rather preserved and then replaced. This is the main difference. The rest procedures are pretty similar.
LASEK treatment actually takes more time to recover than LASIK and PRK.
This type of surgery is too comfortable to be true. As a result of the aesthetical drops, there is pretty much no chance at all for you to feel any serious pain. It might only pinch just a little.
Therefore, if you are one of those people who are afraid of cuts and stitches then do not worry. You will not feel the cuts or lifts of the cornea at all.
There are some reasons which will prevent you from having this surgery. So, there are some conditions if not fulfilled, the doctors will not allow you to go on with the surgery. The following points will allow you to justify if you can have this surgery.
- Age limit. For undergoing this surgery, your age has to be at least 18. Some surgeons will still not allow teenagers to go through this surgery. But generally, if you are 18 or above, you can have laser treatment.
- Major health issues. There are some health issues which if you have will prevent you from laser eye treatment. Pregnancy, other major eye problems that need to be treated first, etc. are problems that disallow you to be a candidate for laser treatment.
- Cornea problem. Some people have a cornea that is too thin or just irregularly shaped. Those people will most likely be rejected by the doctor.
- Your eye must be in a healthy state. This is probably the first thing that the doctors are going to check.
Apart from these points, there could also be other issues that make you ineligible for the surgery. Your doctor will most likely take tests and will examine your health condition before the surgery. Your doctor will inform if you have any health condition that takes surgery out of the discussion.
As mentioned earlier, the laser eye treatment is one of the safest in the operation room. But still, due to careless action, there could be some side effects that deserve your attention.
In the first week or so, there could be hazy vision, trouble in sight at night time. But these are most likely to be temporary problems that will go away soon.
One of the dissatisfactions that many patients had is the chronic severe dry eye as well as glare, halos, etc. But the success rate suggests that these are rare cases.
Another rare problem with the LASIK is a loss of your “best” vision. Your best vision means your highest degree of vision achieved while wearing contact lens or eyeglasses. But again, this is a highly unlikely side effect.
The Plus Points
A surgery that has around 95% success rate needs no admirers. The plus points are obviously beyond us. But these few points are to encourage you and reassure you of this surgery’s advantages.
Many surgeries are really effective. But the risks of those are high too. In this laser surgery, it is not just effective but it is that much safe also.
The laser eye operation is computer-based where laser enters the eye and re-shapes the cornea. That is why it is a precise surgery with fewer chances of errors. And the results are pretty accurate too.
The fact that this surgery is done in the soft eye region and yet there is almost no pain at all is incredible. On top of that, the surgery only takes like 10 minutes.
The aftermath of this surgery is amazing. You are most likely to regain your 20-20 vision. And now there will be no need for you to wear any contact lenses or eyeglasses.
It is hard to say the exact cost because it depends on many factors. But the cost could be estimated at $1200 to $4000. Again, remember that this is only an estimated amount.
Do you have eye problems like myopia, hyperopia or astigmatism? Then after reading all these awesome facts about the eye laser treatment, you don’t really have any other option but to simply accept this as the best surgery available for such diseases.
