Laser Eye Surgery Side Effect

Laser eye surgery or, also known as LASIK (laser-assisted in situ keratomileuses) eye surgery is a surgical procedure, where a laser is used to change the size of the cornea of an eye. The cornea is the transparent, dome-shaped tissue at the front side of the eye which covers the iris, the pupil and also the anterior chamber of the eye. This is the part of the eye which allows light to enter into the eye. LASIK is the most known and also the most commonly performed laser treatment of eye all over the world. In this article, we will know all the necessary information about Laser eye surgery side effects.

This laser eye surgery is performed to eradicate the uncomfortable use of glasses or contact lenses, slippery eyes, stop the necessity of using overpriced bottles of cleaning solutions i.e. fancy eye drops. To sum up, it can be said that LASIK is performed to improve the overall condition of one’s vision.

Did you ever think about the fact that how the laser is used in your eyes to improve its vision? Well, today, I am going to tell you about the whole process of LASIK shortly.

The most common eye problem among all the people around the world is blurred vision. This blurred vision is generally caused by myopia or hypermetropia (also known as hyperopia). These eyesight problems are resolved by the refraction of light with glasses or contact lenses. To correct blurry vision without having the need for wearing glasses and lenses, LASIK surgery is performed.

It is a procedure in which the body tissue i.e. the cornea is reshaped using laser rays by removing or destroying some of the tissue. When the cornea is reshaped, it will give out refraction just as much as you need to have normal eyesight.

Side effects

Like every other clinical surgery, LASIK also has some side effects. But, one thing we all should know about LASIK is, the probability of arising any side effects or complications is very less and rare.

In the first few days, the patient may feel burning, itching, discomfort in their eye. These are the most common symptoms seen right after surgery and for the first few days and afterward. These are very normal issues. These will heal in a few weeks. If not, then you need to consult your doctor.

Aside from these, there many other side effects can appear. They include dry eyes, halos, glare, starbursts, chronic pain, eye infection, detached retinas and sometimes the worse of all, vision loss.

Dry eyes and temporary visual disturbance is the most common side effects of LASIK, seen after surgery. But they automatically heal after a few days. A very small amount of people complain about them as permanent problems.

Dry eye:

I have been saying the word dry eye for some time. Dry eye means a temporary decrease in tear production. The easiest example by which you can understand dry eye is, has it ever happened to you that the inside of your mouth became fully dry? Of course, it has. What does it feels like when the mouth becomes dry because of the absence of saliva? This is exactly what dry eye is. It’s the absence of tears. If you have this problem, the doctor will most probably give you the recommendation of using eye drops for getting remedy from this problem.

Overcorrection is a complication that arises when too much of corneal tissue is removed. This is a very complex problem and very difficult to fix.

This happens when a little amount of tissue is removed which is less than the sufficient amount. People who have myopia are the most prone to this problem. And unlike overcorrection, it is easily fixable. You can get a remedy from this problem by using glasses or contact lenses. Or, to avoid using them, you might have to sit for another laser eye surgery or LASIK surgery.

Glare, Halos, Double vision: These are generally, problems seeing at night or seeing halos around bright lights. They also last for a few days.

When an uneven amount of tissue is removed, it is called astigmatism. To get remedy form this problem the patient has to use glasses or contact lenses or sit for another LASIK surgery to make the number of tissues even.

Unstable vision/change in the vision: This is a very rare problem that can appear. The patient may face difficulty in vision which can lead to loss of vision.

This is also a very rare problem and very few people have to face it. Even if it happens, using drops recommended by the doctor can give you a remedy from causing infection in your eye.

Corneal ectasia:

This is another very rare complication caused by LASIK surgery. In this case, the front part of the eye weakens and the cornea starts to bulge forward. In this case, using glasses or contact lenses can give you a remedy. But in some cases, the patient may need a corneal transplant if necessary.

Ocular neuropathic pain:

This is another one of the very rare problems caused by laser eye surgery. In this case, nerve damage can occur in the cornea. Central ocular neuropathic pain causes because nerve grows back incorrectly and abnormally after they have been shortened by thermal ablation. This is a procedure in which, body tissues are removed with heat. For example, LASIK surgery. The LASIK surgery depends on destroying a part of the cornea. So, this can cause nerve damage and inflammations which cause pain inside of the eye.

Apart from all of these problems, 8 out of 10 successful LASIK operations do not need the use of glasses or contact lenses anymore. This is an average result of a survey. The results vary from people to people.

The whole process of LASIK surgery has improved in these recent years. New lasers are being used which are more reliable and accurate and fewer people face the general side effects rather than the rare ones. The expectation and also, in reality, the success ratio of LASIK surgery is high. For this reason, LASIK surgery is very popular all over the globe. This success can be defined by the quality of vision after the surgery and the patient’s satisfaction.

But the people who do not get a satisfactory result and benefit from this surgery other than laser eye surgery side effects; say that this surgery is not safe. But I have already told you once that the rate of complications after this surgery is rare. I am not speaking for or against the surgery; I am just informing you about everything you need to know about laser eye surgery side effects. You have to make the judge from this.
